#FoodBankFriday

Last week's blog laid bare the ugly truth of living along the breadline. This week I wanted to focus on a more positive note. Things you can do to help those struggling.

#FoodBankFriday

As a food bank user this is a cause that is close to my heart. Especially when over 823,000 food bank parcels have been handed out in six months alone. That is utterly contemptible in a country as wealthy as the UK.

If you can, please consider donating Food and Non-Food Items to your local food bank. You'll be helping some of the most vulnerable in this country.

If you've never donated to a food bank before, you can check the links above on what to donate.

Personally I'd advise to contact your local food bank and ask them. There are over 2,000 food banks in the UK and many of them are independent. They know what they need best.

You can donate directly to food banks, or via collection points in supermarkets all across the UK.

If you do donate, I'd love to hear about it so drop a comment below ⬇️

If like me, you're not in a position to donate then you can still post about #FoodBankFriday on social media to raise awareness.

MPs annual pay rise

For all the overworked, underpaid public sector staff the annual MP pay rise is nothing short of a slap in the face.

While MPs will get to enjoy a ridiculous £82k a year (+ expenses + subsidised food & drink) millions of public sector staff have seen a real terms pay cut.

These are the teachers who teach your children. The nurses who look after you and your loved ones in times of need.

Police = ⬇️ 14.6%
Nurses = ⬇️ 12%
Doctors = ⬇️ 22%
Teachers = ⬇️ 16%
Firefighters = ⬇️ 10%

Whilst MPs get a pay rise, a new report shows the poorest in the UK have seen incomes drop by 7% in the last two years alone. It might not sound a lot but when you're this poor, every penny counts and I can't stress this enough.

As for those worried about COVID-19 consider this;
Austerity related deaths in UK: 130,000 so far
Corona related deaths (Globally): 3,000
Corona related deaths (UK): 1

The DWP let two bombshells about UC, if you've got a minute, it's worth a read.

Lastly, I've been doing some digging into poverty stats for this blog and found some shocking statistics so I've been thinking of doing an in-depth look at the growing wealth divide in the UK, but I'm not sure it's something people want to read.
